Why Katy Perry, Chris Pratt and Netflix Are Stirring Controversy in the Los Angeles Mayoral Election
Katy Perry, Chris Pratt and Netflix boss Ted Sarandos were slammed on Election Day as they joined a host of other Hollywood stars and wealthy elites in throwing their support behind the controversial Los Angeles mayoral candidate , Rick Caruso.
Social media users are slamming the celebrities for being ‘out of touch’ with the 2022 election after preaching to fans that the billionaire property mogul can solve what they described as ‘utter disarray’ in the city.
Mr Caruso, who threw his hat in the ring in February, is causing major disruption to the mayoral race in the famed liberal city as he takes on a former Democratic lawmaker in what promises to be a close competition.
While he now runs as a Democrat, the billionaire businessman has changed parties several times in recent times. First a lifelong Republican, then an Independent, before announcing that he had become a Democrat just before announcing his mayoral race.
With no prior political experience, he invested $100 million of his own money in his campaign against fellow Democrat Karen Bass.
Ms. Bass, a congresswoman and former Speaker of the State Assembly, would become the first woman and second black person to lead City Hall if she wins.
She has the support of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party as well as leading Democrats, including President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama and progressive Senator Bernie Sanders.
But, with Mr. Caruso’s massive war chest and backing from a growing number of Hollywood names, the election promises to be close.
On Monday, Perry posted a photo on Instagram of herself voting for Mr. Caruso.
“I vote for a myriad of reasons (see news) but mostly because Los Angeles is a hot mess. #letsgocaruso #yestomeasure28 #yestomeasure1 #doyoubutjustuseyourvoteok,” she captioned the post.
Actor Chris Pratt also took to social media to urge his fans to join him in voting for Mr Caruso.
“I lived in Los Angeles for over 20 years. It’s been great for me. During this time I have seen what many residents here have seen, the gradual decline of the city in pain and utter disarray,” he wrote.
“If you are a Los Angeles voter, I urge you to vote for @rickcarusola. He is a builder. He knows how to fuck himself. He’s the guy from our town. Rick Caruso for LA Mayor.
The stars’ endorsements come after Netflix boss Ted Sarandos paid for a full-page ad in the Hollywood journalist, where he described Mr Caruso as “the democrat I was waiting for”.
“The entire Democratic Party Machine had aligned itself with a candidate who is part of the very system that is bringing this city down,” he said in the broadcast.
“They’re wrong. I’m a lifelong Democrat. Rick is the Democrat I’ve been waiting for, a man with a plan and a track record of accomplishing impossible tasks in California and Los Angeles.
The top Democratic donor’s endorsement comes after his wife Nicole Avant also pledged her support for Mr Caruso last week.
Other famous faces who have pledged their support from the comfort of their Hollywood mansions include Gwyneth Paltrow, Kim Kardashian, Elon Musk and Snoop Dogg.
But many social media users pushed back on political advice from Pratt, whose stepfather is a movie star turned former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Several people have poked fun at celebrities for being “out of touch” with the American people, saying their political interests are unlikely to match those of their fans.
“That should tell you something that white celebrities with net worths between 8 and 9 figures support rick caruso lol…if you’re not worth at least $10 million you can bet your interests probably don’t match up chris pratt and gwenyth paltrow,” one person tweeted.
“I love all the horrible LA celebrities (Chris Pratt, Katy Perry, etc.) who post pro-Caruso messages that sound like The City Is Falling Apart and all they mean is they sometimes have to see homeless people from their limos, that’s all,” another quipped.
Another person wrote, “It’s so funny to see the most out of touch celebrities and CEOs talking to the rest of us about Rick Caruso like it’s connected to our lives at all.” Trust me, he Go fix our broken city.” Actually Chris Pratt, you should venmo me $300.
Other social media users have suggested the stars actually turn out to be Republicans.
“Breaking news from literal years ago: Chris Pratt is an as***ty Republican,” one person said.
“Katy Perry voted for Republican Rick Caruso for mayor of LA. That shows you how bad things got. For a celebrity to not only vote R, but then post it publicly, that’s another thing. You could say the energy is shifting,” one person wrote of Perry.
One of the pop star’s fans also expressed his disappointment.
“I’ve been hyping her up a lot lately and I love her SO MUCH but I’m so disappointed with Katy Perry’s decision to support Rick Caruso’s mayoral campaign,” they tweeted.
A recent UC Berkeley and LA Times poll gives Ms Bass a four-point lead – a drastic drop from the 15-point lead she enjoyed in early October and a lead that now sits within a margin of ‘mistake.
