TV shows have always been one of my favorite sources of fashion inspiration. I pulled out a checkered set to match the clueless and accompanied it with a “as if!” Instagram caption, shoe shopping justified with a “what would Carrie Bradshaw do?” mentality and signed my “xoxo” messages while wearing a bow headband. With the latest version of stranger things season four, I predict a slight uptick in ’80s-inspired fashion, and the new Quiksilver x Stranger Things collaboration makes it easy to pull off the authentic look.
For those of us who weren’t around in the (guilty) 1980s, let me give a brief history lesson. Quiksilver was the brand to wear, especially among the high school cool crowd. Quiksilver has created all the classic ’80s pieces you’ve probably been looking for in a vintage store, from colorful fleeces to geometric windbreakers to oversized denim jackets. The heart of each look was rooted in laid-back surf culture.
Now I won’t give anything stranger things Season four spoilers – all it takes is one look at this season’s promotional poster to know that the kids have all grown up and are heading to high school. It seems like only yesterday Eleven was fine, eleven. The show’s creators wanted the high school experience of the ’80s to be portrayed in the most authentic way possible, which involved pulling elements from Quiksilver’s extensive archives.
Quiksilver sifted through its past collections and selected 50 pieces which it believed were representative of the most popular fashion trends of the 80s. These pieces can be seen in both original and replica form on the main cast and extras as they navigate the high school hallways in the show – and you’ll get to wear them, too.
Quiksilver has released five new collections of stranger things– inspired clothing for everyday and surf settings. Each collection refers to a different place in the stranger things universe – Surfer Boy Pizza, Lenora Hills Surf Club, Hellfire Surf Club and, 1986 and The Upside Down. Each piece takes original Quiksilver design elements and brings the vibrant pop-punk vibe of 80s surf culture to life.
If you haven’t binge-watched stranger things season four yet, or worse – I haven’t seen the show at all, I promise you’re going to want to do it in a Lenora Hills half zip. Keep reading for my favorite picks from the collections that will have you feeling like you’re hanging out with the cast.
