Mercy Eke reveals reason behind Igbo accent and hits out at critics

Big Brother Naija Season 4 winner Mercy Eke has addressed those trolling her because of her Igbo accent.
In an interview with media personality, Taymesan, published on Friday, Mercy revealed why she speaks with an Igbo accent.
The Imo-born reality TV star noted that she was born and raised in Owerri, the state capital, and it affected her speech.
“I was born in Owerri. I did everything at Owerri. I actually left Owerri in 2016,” Mercy said.
Speaking about her upbringing, she said, “I am the last child. I studied at Owerri; with the help of my mother. I finished school. I did what had to be done. I left Owerri in 2016.
“I say this because some people really don’t know. When they talk about my accent, the Igbo accent, I look at them and say, ‘how do you want me to speak?’
“I was educated in Owerri, primary and secondary. It was only the National Youth Service that got me out of Owerri. How do they want me to talk?
She added, however, that she would not be moved by what people say about her because of her originality.
The entrepreneur said, “That’s me. I’m confident. It’s me. I saw and met many people.
“And most of the most prominent people in the world, like Cristiano Ronaldo, how does he speak? With an accent or in his language. And he is the most famous in the world. People love him.”
Mercy, however, said Nigerians wanted her to speak with a British accent, insisting she would continue to be original.
