The next one will be at the Timmins Memorial Cemetery.
Reference Librarian Karina Douglas-Takayesu said she hopes to provide participants with all information about the Memorial Cemetery, originally known as Catholic Cemetery, which was moved in 1917 from Fifth Avenue Cemetery to the current location. on Pine Street South, under the direction of Father Charles-Eugène Thériault.
“We will focus on some of the oldest parts of the cemetery and on the graves of some famous people such as Bill Barilko, the hockey player and also on a mass grave for some of the miners who were killed in the fire in the town. Hollinger mine in 1928.
The presentation will take place virtually via Zoom on Tuesday August 17 at 6 p.m.
As to why the tour is taking place online and not in person, Douglas-Takayesu explained, “I had really hoped things would have been a lot more open in the spring and we could do it in person or people would come. at the cemetery site and we were walking around and actually looking at some of the graves, but we decided to do it online because things kind of went up and down.
“We’ve decided that all of our library programs stay online and just in case things change the other way around, then we won’t have to make cancellations. The other thing that’s also nice is that a lot of the people who were on the last program were from out of town, so they were quite far away like BC and were watching the presentation with interest.
The library hopes to do the third session, which will take place at Tisdale Cemetery, in person next month.
