Laurelwood Garden Club learns to preserve history at next meeting
FITCHBURG – The Laurelwood Garden Club will hold its first meeting for the 2022-2023 season on Friday, September 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the Fitchburg Historical Society, 718 Main St., Fitchburg.
Susan Navarre, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Historical Society, will guide us through the paths of history preservation, programs and open house exhibits. She will discuss the importance of researching, collecting, preserving and cataloging the growth, events, famous people and industries that have taken us to today and beyond.
The club will feature various items donated to the garden club to catalog and preserve the history of the garden club.
The Laurelwood Garden Club will hold its 11th Annual Scholarship Tea on Saturday, September 17 at the Fitchburg Art Museum to benefit its scholarship fund. Guests will be served English tea, flavors and sweets to a room overflowing with members and their guests. Tables will be decorated with a different Tablescape theme displaying a variety of colorful, whimsical and interesting centerpieces with the theme carried throughout the table with dishes and artifacts.
The club is offering a scholarship to a high school student who will pursue an education in agriculture, horticulture, landscape design or architecture, conservation, forestry, agronomy, urban planning, land management, botany, biology and environmental studies. This year’s scholarship was awarded to Harrison Taylor, a graduate of Lunenburg High School. He will attend the University of Vermont in Montpellier majoring in environmental science.
Scheduled Laurelwood Garden Club programs for the remainder of the year include the October 14 reunion program on Something Fall. The annual planting of 1,000 daffodil bulbs as part of the club’s civic beautification project will take place on Tuesday, October 18 in various public spaces throughout Fitchburg. At the November 18 meeting, members will participate in a hands-on holiday door wreath making workshop. The club’s annual holiday lunch will be held at the Old Mill Restaurant on Thursday 7th December.
The Laurelwood Garden Club partners with the Fitchburg Art Museum to host the annual Art in Bloom. This year, Art in Bloom will celebrate its 25th anniversary from Thursday April 27 to Sunday April 30, 2023.
The Laurelwood Garden Club is a member of the Garden Club Federation of Mass, Inc. and affiliated with National Garden Clubs Incorporated, New England Region. Membership and meetings are open to customers who enjoy any type of gardening, who are interested in floral design and working with flowers and the programs offered.
