Black women have always “embodied” fashion and style
Would you believe us if we told you this was Regina Hall’s first New York Fashion Week experience, like never before? We also didn’t believe it until she told us as she kicked off Kate Spade New York’s 30th anniversary to unveil her Spring 2023 collection. week. I am creating a memory with you so that you will be one of my earliest memories of Fashion Week,” said the Honk for Jesus said the star humbly.
Alongside notable participants including the model Emira of Spainactress Ziweactress Rebel Wilson, star of the Netflix series “Never Have I Ever” Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Hall was one of many attendees to attend and interact with the experiential presentation during New York Fashion Week. In perfect harmony with the beauty of spring, the horror movie alumna was dressed head to toe in the collection designed by Tom Mora and Jennifer Lyu. From the sophistication of the terrace striped poplin shirt in black/cream to the tulip striped midi skirt in plum pink, Hall served up a look that only an icon like her could.
Speaking of icon, did we mention she was wearing the small Sam icon tote in true white, alongside her flower greenhouse ring in multi and tulip greenhouse earrings in multi pink. Talk about ultimate branding. “I chose this one today,” she said, proudly raising her back. “This bag is good because it’s not too big. You can use it and wear the long straps, and it is also ideal for the inside of the elbow. I feel like it looks like a lady.

During the presentation at the World Trade Center in New York, Girls United caught up with Hall exclusively about her relationship with Kate Spade New York, her thoughts on Gen-Z fashion trends and her favorite fall fashion must-haves.
Girls United: Take me back to the beginning of your relationship with Kate Spade.
Regina Room: “I guess technically my relationship started when I was living in New York. I think I bought my first Kate Spade bag probably over the summer in the late 90s before I found out they made clothes. I just knew their bags and shoes I think they have really comfy dresses For me I need something I can wear that’s comfortable so I can start out in the day but maybe also go out to dinner if I was meeting friends in the evening I’ve been past tight dresses all day [and] I like comfort. I like that it is beautiful and that there is something chic about it, but I like that it is comfortable. I like, ‘it’s great, but not a mindless effort.’
What do you think of the representation of black women in fashion and style over the years?
“It’s hard to say because we’re so influential in fashion and style. We always were, even when we weren’t invited to the party, you know what I mean? The party was still reproducing a lot of what we were already doing. I think we embody fashion and style. I think a lot of things are inspired by things that we’ve made stylish, or that we’ve just worn and just look stylish because we did. It ranges from the clothes and hairstyles we wear to the way we wear [them]. It’s great that we’re seeing more faces behind the scenes designing; it’s so exciting for me. I think this is an area where our influence has always been there, but now we are finally seeing credit given and opportunities for us to be part of the process, instead of just being the inspiration for the process.

With New York Fashion Week comes fall, and we love fall fashion. What are your fall fashion must-haves?
“I always like nice black pants. I like nice denim pants, high waisted, that you can wear a shirt in. You can also wear a nice heel with it, and then you can just walk out. That’s great for fall. I love a nice nice cashmere sweater. A good turtleneck is always a must, as well as basic solids, creams, whites, blacks and grays. These are my colors. If I want to be chic, I’ll put a red in. Especially if it’s fall, if it’s a richer blood red.
We are now in a digital age where there are so many hacks and trends on the internet. What do you think of Gen-Z fashion, beauty and style hacks?
“I love seeing the style expressions of new generations. I think it’s crazy. I was glad they brought back the high waisted jeans. I was like, ‘Well, let’s go, Gen Z!’, and I was happy with the wider pant leg. There are a lot of things that are really simplistic but fun. I kinda like some of the big androgynous looks that are out now. I always like to see what each generation brings to fashion and style, what I can steal from it and what suits me. Now I can’t do these hot new shorts with the butt and crop top because my crop top days are over. It doesn’t look like me anymore, but I wore it when I was that age, and it’s fun. It’s fun to see young people embody the style in their own way.
