Alex Eala on the portrayal of Filipino tennis
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 14) – Filipino tennis ace Alex Eala remains proud to represent the country after winning his second Grand Slam title last week.
In a recorded interview with CNN Philippines’ New Day aired on Monday, Eala shared what it’s like to be the only representative of the Philippines on the Women’s Tennis Association circuit and soar into the junior scene.
“It makes me really proud. It gives me confidence to know that I have worked so hard to get here,” said Eala.
She expressed confidence that her achievements could also inspire other aspiring Filipino athletes to excel and bring pride to the country.
“But it also makes me want to inspire other Filipinos to play sports or whatever they want, it could be tennis or whatever, because I know we can do it and I know we have the potential. to do it, ”she added.
As the country marked Independence Day last Saturday, 16-year-old Eala and her Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva sensational won the 2021 French Open women’s doubles champions against Russian pair Maria Bondarenko. and Hungarian Amarissa Kiara Tóth, 6-0. , 7-5.
Eala even offered his victory to the country and thanked the Filipinos for their support during his acceptance speech.
“It was a really proud moment for me and it made me really proud to be from the Philippines,” she shared.
While not among the country’s representatives for the Tokyo Olympics next month, Eala will certainly not be closing her doors to a possible candidacy in a few years.
“It’s still a bit far, a long way to go, but it’s definitely a long-term plan,” she noted.
Eala is set to compete in the 25k women’s tournament in Madrid, Spain this week before heading to Wimbledon 2021 in London at the end of the month.
